Suggested Walks in Paris
March 28, 2008 – 8:48 pmSuggested walks in Paris, start at the lle de la Cite, the historic as well as geographic centre of Paris, and one time power base of the French kings. Not to be missed are the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame the two-storeyed Sainte-Chapelle, and the Conciergerie where, during the Revolution Marie-Antoniette, Danton and Robespierre were held while awaiting sentence.
Crossing to the Left Bank, the boulevard Saint-Michel leads straight into the lively Quartier Latin and Saint-Germain-des-Pres notorious stamping ground of existentialist Bohemia an still one of the most charming districts of Paris.
Pause here to enjoy of coffee in one of those cultural hotbeds known elsewhere as cafes, where Jean Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway and Piccaso were once among the regulars; rummage about in the antique shpos and avant-garde boutiques, or stroll around the colourful market in the little rue de Buci.

Now cross the river to the Right Bank for the undisputed highlight of any trip in Paris, a visit to the Louvre, the ultimate in museums and a real treasure house of art of all ages and cultures. you cannot hope to do justice to it in an afternoon, indeed a week woud hardly suffice ; so decide on your priorities at the start.
Afterwards, if the ultimate is fine take a walk through the Jardins des Tuileries to the place de la Concorde at the southern end of the famous Champs-Elysees.
Later, having started the evening in one of the city’s many excellent restaurants, the pulsating night-life of Monparnasse of Saint-Germain-de-Pres beckons. Paris, like New York, is” a city, which never sleeps”.
